Cabot has been practicing sustainability since the very beginning—reimagining a former coal mine in Cape Breton and breathing new life into the land and community. We believe that the longevity of a course requires environmental sustainability and community stability. Our ability to employ the wonderful people who live in the communities surrounding our locations is central to making our operations sustainable. Cabot will continue to prioritize this ethos of building remarkable destinations that stand the test of time, and our team remains dedicated to working in harmony with the surrounding environments where we are privileged to work and play.

Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program

The Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses, endorsed by the United States Golf Association, provides information and guidance to help golf courses preserve and enhance wildlife habitat and protect natural resources.

Cabot has formed an exclusive partnership with Audubon as an early adopter of the Signature Sanctuary Platinum Certification program, Audubon International’s highest certification level. Through the program, Cabot is working towards having each of our locations achieve the Signature Sanctuary Platinum Certification. To achieve the certification, Cabot Cabe Breton must maintain a high standard of environmental quality in:

Eliminate Single Use Plastic

Cabot Cape Breton offers aluminum, reusable water bottles in efforts to reduce plastic waste, conserve resources, and promote environmentally friendly alternatives. Throughout the resort, including on our golf courses, refill stations have been installed to provide guests with cold, purified water to encourage guests to limit the need for multiple bottles throughout their stay and beyond.

Bird Boxes

Bird Boxes have been installed throughout Cabot Cape Breton in efforts to provide safe nesting sites and contribute to the conservation of bird species. Bird Boxes are strategically placed throughout the resort to support and maintain the local biodiversity.

Bat Boxes

In addition to our bird boxes, bat boxes have also been implemented throughout the property. Bats are an integral part of our ecosystem and offer a wide array of benefits including natural pest control for insects such as mosquitoes and agricultural pests, biodiversity support, pollination and seed dispersion, and carbon sequestration.

Clean the World

Cabot Cape Breton is a proud participant of Clean the World’s Global Hospitality Recycling Program where our resort’s soap bars and plastic amenities are diverted from landfills and transformed into life saving, essential supplies for communities in need across the globe.

Nespresso

With the help of Nespresso’s recycling program, we are pleased to offer our onsite guests freshly brewed coffee from the comfort of their room or home. Nespresso’s innovative recycling program was developed in close collaboration with Purolator to provide an easy and 100% free process across Canada. Cabot Cape Breton uses Nespresso’s Recycling Boxes to ensure that our used Nespresso aluminum capsules are collected and sent to the nearest warehouse to be recycled.

Audubon International

Cabot is the exclusive environmental stewardship partner with Audubon International. In this exclusive, groundbreaking partnership, we are proud to become the largest destination company to enroll every golf course and “built” element into this comprehensive, all-inclusive Platinum Signature Sanctuary certification program.

SchoolsPlus

In the spirit of growing the game, Cabot Cape Breton partners with SchoolsPlus Inverness County. This program provides registration and transportation to our junior camps, and Cabot Cape Breton reserves up to two spots in each camp for members of the SchoolsPlus program. Growing the game with the next generation of golfers is a shared passion for all our golf professionals throughout the Cabot portfolio.

Black Lives Matter Golf

Cabot Cape Breton has partnered with Black Lives Matter Golf (BLMG) to host the BLMG Mentorship Program. Local BIPOC youth gather for a weekend of golf instruction, led by our Cabot Cape Breton PGA of Canada golf professionals, and thoughtful conversation mediated by BLMG’s talented and compassionate mentors.

Scholarship Program

Every year, Cabot Cape Breton awards staff members tuition funds through the Pathway to Success Scholarship Program. Team Members who are currently studying in the Maritimes in various programs including Culinary Arts, Hospitality Management, Tourism and Travel Management, and Golf Operations are eligible recipients. With so many seasonal team members being students, it brings great pride to be able to assist them in their academic journeys.

Caddie School for Soldiers

The Caddie School for Soldiers is an amazing non-profit organization designed to help Canadian, American, and UK veterans transition to civilian life by training them to become caddies. Since establishing the school in 2019, the Caddie School for Soldiers has positively impacted the lives of dozens of veterans. Once extensive caddie training is complete, alumni depart with a new sense of peace, purpose, camaraderie, and a newfound belief in themselves. We are proud and grateful to have members of the Caddie School for Soldiers as part of our caddie yard who work tirelessly and vigorously for the benefit of our golfers’ on-course experience.

First Green

Our hardworking turf team have been proud participants of the GCSAA’s First Green program where they hosted local high school students to learn more about the art of agronomy and greenkeeping. The First Green program is a science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM) environmental outreach program that uses the golf course as a living laboratory. K-12 students participate in hands-on, outdoor learning stations that include lessons on wildlife habitat, soil science, environmental sustainability, mathematics, water conservation, water quality, career exploration and much more.

Building Futures for Youth Program

Cabot Cape Breton has partnered with the Construction Association of Nova Scotia to employ team members from their Building Futures for Youth (BFY) program. The BFY program provides grade 10 and 11 students with an opportunity to safely explore careers in Nova Scotia’s construction industry and gain experience in a construction industry occupation, earn co-operative education credits, register as construction trades pre-apprentices, make connections with industry, and most importantly, gather information to help make informed career choices.
